How was documenta funded, what role did galleries play in this, and how did the “world exhibition” position itself within the East-West conflict? The workshop discussion (in German) “documenta East/West: Art Policy and the Art Market” by Alexia Pooth and Mela Dávila Freire uses these questions as a starting point to outline, through individual case studies, the complex relationship between the market, art, and politics surrounding documenta, which was founded in 1955. Among other topics, the focus will be on the gallery owner Hein Stünke, who was a member of the documenta team between 1959 and 1968 and co-founded the “documenta Foundation”—an association created by documenta itself—to market multiples and editions by the artists; the acquisitions of the collector Peter Ludwig; and GDR propaganda against the “capitalist art world.”

This was a session in the Forum Kunst und Markt series, organized by the Centre for Art Market Studies at Technische Universität Berlin, which took place on January 22, 2022.
