Irene Kopelman – Field to Form, published by the María José Jove Foundation Art Centre in A Coruña and Roma Publications in Amsterdam, offers the first comprehensive overview of Kopelman’s extensive career in the form of a monograph on her work. The book brings together a series of essays on Kopelman’s work, analysed from different perspectives, and varied and comprehensive documentation on seventeen of the projects that Kopelman, in close collaboration with researchers, scientists and other specialists, has developed over the last twenty-five years.
My role in this book was to collaborate with Irene and the designer, Laura Pappa (laurapappa.biz), to develop the overall concept that would define the publication and find a good structure for such abundant and diverse material. The use of colour as a visual index was key to organising the information on Irene’s projects, which often take various forms or are realised across different media.
“In my work, drawing is a vital element that’s linked to the experience of wanting to know. It’s a form of knowledge that is very specific and unique. My entire process is like the path taken by a thread as it gets tangled up and wraps back around itself, seeking out topics and solutions. This includes traveling to different places, and requires communication with researchers. Where exactly does drawing begin?
